Player’s Oath at the Tokyo Open 2024

For the first time in my life, I was honored to deliver the Player’s Oath at the 76th Tokyo Table Tennis Championship. It took a month to decide on what I wish to deliver on each an every player’s behalf, and repeated practice to make it heard smoothly (in Japanese).

“Player’s Oath !!

We, players of table tennis,

Express heartfelt appreciation to our family, colleagues and volunteers serving for this championship for their selfless support.

We, as true lovers of sport, respect each other, applaud each other,

And with full of health and energy,

promise to promote the spirit of fair play.”

The president of Tokyo TT Association was nodding with smile during my oath,

I was glad and relieved to hear positive reflection from volunteers, friends and the audience.

It was wonderful experience in sport beyond the game. Thank You!

東京卓球選手権大会の選手宣誓

宣誓、わたしたち選手一同は

日頃よりサポートいただいている家族、仲間、大会運営の 方々に感謝し、

卓球を愛する者同士、お互いを尊重し、讃え合い、

元気いっぱい、フェアプレーすることを誓います。

一ヶ月ほど、心の伝わる、わかりやすい宣誓の言葉を思案しました。どもらずに宣誓できるよう前日からはお経のように何度も唱え続けました。

大会会長や関係者の方々、友人や聴衆の方々からもとても良かったと有り難いお言葉をいただきました。おそらく一生に一度ですね。試合を越えた素晴らしい体験を積ませていただきました。ありがとうございます。

Congrat my best friend（東京選手権大会で立花くんが私に勝って準優勝）！！

My best ping pong friend, Mr. Tachibana, defeated me and then went through to get silver medal at the Tokyo Open.  It was for the first time, Tachibana-kun got me down in the TT game and then he carried my spirit in him to win very tough games including against Mr Kahara who defeated me in the All Kanto Championship final last month. He is a real gentleman. Even when exhausted after these tough games, he gave up his sheet for an old person standing even far away from him in a train. He is soft and gentle, and rather he struggles to find a true motivation to be in MUST WIN mode. This time, he amazed us by demonstrating his dynamic eye-catching play with high fighting spirit. Congrat my friend!!  After the game, we went to see Kamakura-Buddha and he presented me a nice hat, saying “you look like Harrison Ford” ha ha ha

今回の東京選手権大会の4回戦で、親友の立花くんに初めて打ち負かされました。そのあと、立花くんは無茶苦茶頑張って、山田さんとの準々決勝を3-2でしのぎ、なんと準決勝で優勝候補トップの華原選手にドライブ、スマッシュ、カットのマジカルプレーで大熱戦を展開して3-1の初勝利を飾りました。とにかく素晴らしかった。決勝戦は疲れていて、私がマスターズの決勝で逆転勝ちした佐藤選手に敗れ、準優勝となりましたが、今大会で一番の活躍でした。

彼は生来の紳士で、大会のあとで疲れていてもすぐに電車の席を高齢者に譲るのです。鎌倉を案内したときに入った帽子屋で、これぜったいにあうよ、と風変わりなおっさん帽子を私にかぶせ、「ハリソン・フォードに見えるぜ」と笑ってました。

明日からは大阪で立花くんと西田くんといっしょのチームで試合。それから華原さんのところで練習する予定。

友情も勝負も人生をカラフルにし、豊かにする大切なエッセンスですね。
